Text Production for Practice2Praxis, July 2024

Jay Koh sharing his research during the introductory workshop for practitioners: Practices to Praxis at Dance Nucleus.

Led by Jay Koh, DFA

This July workshop focuses on creating qualitative research texts for practice2praxis.

It is a follow-up to the introductory workshop in May 2024, which addressed the criteria for nurturing development towards a constructive praxis. The previous workshop covers a range of topics, including social conditionings, societal contracts, philosophical outlooks, institutional violence, real-world interactions, intersubjective interactions, negotiations, and reciprocities (see link for more information).

This initial session will involve discussing the details of analytical structures and processes for creating texts that help practitioners develop a critical praxis as a form of knowledge production.

NOTE: Text-based researchers or producers (academic,…) who wish to participate in producing a qualitative project toward a praxis-led outcome can discuss their participation with the facilitator.

Outcomes:

  • This workshop aims to help practitioners construct qualitative knowledge through praxis-led research and text production, facilitating critical discussions across sectors, disciplines, and belief systems. These exercises can also prepare participants for advanced studies in academic accredited or informal professional pursuits, enabling them to respond to contemporary issues and contribute to decolonisation efforts while nurturing individual well-being.
  • Participants will learn how to produce doctorate-level praxis texts for submission to peer-reviewed journals of different impact factors. However, these texts should avoid fiction and creative writing styles, except in cases where they are the focus of investigation.
  • The workshop also explores collaboration and team building through participatory writing exercises, following a trajectory from concept-led to praxis-led (art-led) participatory processes.
  • Emphasis will be placed on participant-led research, particularly in critical subjects such as the dominances in cultural productions, outcomes of institutional violence, and collateral damages in society. After the initial session, participants will undertake individual research and text production. Seminars will be conducted to examine and analyze participants’ research and texts, with tutorials available upon request to support individual timelines.

A follow-up session will then prepare texts for submission to selected peer-reviewed journals or other forms of publications to facilitate scholarly research.
